BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions
BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions would like to extend a paid (and non-paid based on availability) summer externship invite to all veterinary students, but especially those who are considering a career in shelter medicine. Here at BARC we have worked tirelessly to build a world-class facility and would like to provide veterinary students with a world-class educational experience.
BARC is the City of Houston’s Animal Shelter and Adoption Facility. BARC is the only city shelter in Houston required by law to accept every animal that comes through our doors regardless of breed, temperament, health conditions, and circumstance (from owner surrender, stray pickup, rescued or confiscated animals). We have built a best-in-class team that stewards our mission of professionalism, responsibility, compassion, commitment, integrity, and accountability.
All veterinary students who are interested in our program must be enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year at an accredited veterinary school (some exceptions will be made for 2nd year students). Students who participate in our externship program at BARC, will participate in a 2 week or 4 week rotation, and will be expected to work 40 hours a week at $10.00 per hour. In order to provide an excellent learning experience, we are only accepting 4-8 students per rotation. Externship opportunities will be available during the months of May, June, July, and August (later months may be available upon request).
During the externship, students will be directly supervised in spaying and neutering, management and record keeping, sanitation, population management, medical health and physical well-being, behavioral health and mental well-being, animal handling, euthanasia, animal transport, and public health. A large portion of this rotation will consist of performing high volume, high quality, spay and neuter surgeries and techniques.
